Description

This year marked the very first time in nearly a decade that I made a sculpture piece (in elementary school I had done a lot of clay sculptures). This piece was conceived during an in-class assignment where the student must derive a sculpture with only wire. I was inspired by one statue in Toronto, that was inspired by cubist art, which lead to an abstract representation of a human. I wanted to create a sculpture of a person that used the lines of the wire like three-dimensional scribbles. The result was this mechanical humanoid figure whose stance reminds me of a robot in disrepair. The lines distort the figure's body but provides a sense of movement and stress that it is enduring. It's amazing what a wire can produce solely by manipulating its shape. Definitely, refreshing to do an art style that is largely unpracticed by me.
