Description

This is the final version of the hand sculpture for a class project I did, which is a plaster sculpture. The plaster while it covered the elaborate patterns of the chicken wire did create a new texture and surface to toy with. The greatest challenge for this sculpture was the quality of plaster mix, which is cumbersome and even frustrating when it cracks. This is given for an amateur sculptor, but I managed to repair most of the sculpture. I carved some lines and smoothed some areas of the sculpture to mimic some anatomical features. The inspiration behind this art piece was oppression of thought, the hand itself is a symbol of expression. The hand can either be representational of the struggles of freedom of expression, or as an oppressor that eliminates inferior thoughts. In this photo I chose a position that suited the latter theme, giving the sculpture a paranormal vibe. The hauntingly pale surface and coarse lines/crevices creates a sense of paranoia. The lighting enhanced the eerieness of the hand, and in black and white it looks quite grotesque. I hope you like it!
